Found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, Labradorite is a member of the feldspar family and forms in layers of rock. When light is diffracted from these layers, the observer can witness shimmering iridescence an electric play of colours dancing across its surface which is called Labradorescence. Originally discovered in Labrador, Canada, they crystals are so beautiful with their magical colourful sheen, that the local Inuit peoples believed the Northern Lights were captured within them. The Inuit were not the only people hypnotised by Labradorites beauty, the Native Americans called the gem ‘Firestone’ because the light captured below the surface of the stone looked as if it was dancing with fire.
