Indigo Gabbro (also known as Mystic Merlinite) is a beautiful newly mined crystal from Madagascar (although also found in Alaska) that only surfaced in the last few years. It has an amazing array of colors from indigo purple to black with mottled silvers and greys and the occasional spots of chatoyancy due to the feldspar within it. When you hold this stone in the sunlight, you will also see that it has a kind of violet iridescence that’s both beautiful and unique.
Named by the German geologist Christian Leopold von Buch after a town in the Italian Tuscany region, Gabbro refers to a large group of dark igneous rock made of silicate that’s rich in iron and magnesium which forms when molten magma is trapped beneath the Earth's surface and cools into a crystalline mass.
Gabbro often contains valuable amounts of chromium, nickel, cobalt, gold, silver, platinum, and copper sulfides.
