Aventurine is a translucent to opaque form of microcrystalline quartz known for its bright inclusions that give it a shimmery look, which has been named aventurescence.
The aventurescence comes from specks mica which cause the sparkles in aventurine crystals.
Hematite or goethite inclusions create orange and brown crystals. Aventurine ranges in colour from green, peach, brown and blue.
Aventurine is found in India, Chile, Spain, Russia, Brazil, Austria, and Tanzania but was first discovered in the 18th Century. Its name comes from the Italian, “a ventura,” or “all’avventura,” meaning, “by chance.”
It is interesting that the name for the stone is derived from an accident. One day sometime in the 1700s, Venetian glass workers were preparing molten glass when copper filings accidentally fell into the batch. When the glass cooled, it was used to make jewellery as it had beautiful, random iridescent sparkles throughout it. The name “aventurine” was later given to the natural stone as it looked like this glass.
Aventurine is the Star Sign for Libra and the Planetary stone of Taurus and it is a 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
Aventurine has been used as a lucky talisman and is a popular stone for gamblers.
A legend from ancient Tibet says that aventurine was used to improve nearsightedness and to increase the wearer's creativity.
